The Last of a Dying Breed: Paul Schweitzer, Typewriter Repairman by Shalene Gupta

Meet Paul Schweitzer a typewriter repairman running a thriving business. He’s been repairing typewriters for 54 years, but what surprises him the most, is demand for his services is growing. Paul Schweitzer, 75, started working at his father’s 5th Avenue typewriter shop as a 21 year old. As a child he grew up around typewriters, and spent hours watching his father repair them. Now, he and his son Justin, run a flourishing business. When Schweitzer started working, there were several typewriter repair shops in the neighborhood. In order to survive, Schweitzer learned how to repair laser printers. Today Gramercy is the only typewriter repair service left in New York City and much of the surrounding area. Gramercy has several out-of-state customers who mail in their typewriters to be repaired.
